Reference
:
The first capital alludes to a competition between the king's candidate and the monks' for succeeding Abbot Joscerand (d. April 1096). His successor, Abbot Simon, was not elected until 1103. The monk, Hitier, is thought to be a dignatory of the abbey. This identification is based on the key he is holding, which is frequently interpreted as a sign of trust. The second capital represents the monk, Hugh, and St. Benedict. St. Benedict introduces Hugh to the Virgin, who is seated on a throne.
