Lions appear frequently in western Romanesque art. Many meanings are attributed to them. They may be used as a deocrative motif, a symbol of evil, used by God to triumph for the Good, or to represent Good, courage, or Christ.
The portal and the bell tower were constructed shortly after Saint-Porchaire was attached to the abbey of Bourgeueil (1068). Paleographic investigation sets the inscription to this date.
